Peptides can be controversial and confusing but ultimately they can be a powerful adjunct to patient care. If you have been in the health optimization space for a while you have likely heard and may even be taking peptides! If you are new to this great space I'd like to introduce them to you! Either way I want to take just a few minutes to explain why they are so powerful and to dispel some concerns that I hear from people getting started with peptide protocols.

First the good.

Peptides in general are natural occurring molecules that can impact very specific targets or multiple systems within the body. They can be applied topically, orally or frequently through sub q injection. We use them in numerous protocols from anti-aging to bone health and everything in between. As part of the OHH master plan peptides can make a huge difference in results!

The concerns.

Peptides are for the most part not FDA regulated and as such are generally used "off label." This can be concerning to some patients but the FDA's role has to be clearly understood to see why a practice like OHH can safely recommend and prescribe them. The FDA's website states that they are charged with ensuring that human drugs, and vaccines are safe and effective. They also state that they are required to assure that cosmetics and dietary supplements are safe and properly labeled. However, peptides are neither "drugs" by the FDA's definition nor are they dietary supplements.

The truth is that they fall in between with some overlap on both sides. Some peptides, like insulin, is a pharmaceutical drug and regulated by the FDA. Other's like GHK-cu can be found in both cosmetics and over the counter supplements.  With over the counter products the responsibility lies with the consumer to understand what they are taking. When it comes to prescription products that don't fit into either category the responsibility is on the prescribing provider.

At OHH we partner with multiple high quality pharmacies that go far above and beyond expectations to provide products with thresholds for purity and sterility exceeding that of pharmaceutical companies. We carefully review the available literature to understand the risks and benefits of each compound before recommending them to patients. As a serial self experimenter I've used most of them myself!

A word of caution!

The products we research and recommend are often available direct to consumer through international companies or pharmacies selling products "for research purposes only." Keep in mind that quality and purity MUST be monitored and highly scrutinized! Do not attempt to use these on your own under these circumstances!

Peptides can be used in protocols safely and reliably. When used in conjunction with a comprehensive program they can make a big difference in patient outcomes. If you are interested in using peptides and are a patient of OHH reach out to your team to see what protocols may benefit you. If are interested in working with a team that uses peptides or know someone that is you can set up a free consultation to learn if OHH is the right fit!

Dr. Doug
